Caterham reveals Seven HWM Edition inspired by first Stirling Moss F1 car

Caterham and its dealership partner HMW have collaborated to launch the limited edition Seven HWM Edition — a nod to the past that takes inspiration from the 1951 HWM-Alta grand prix car.

Caterham’s engineering team has joined forces with HWM (Hersham and Walton Motors) to create 19 examples of the HWM Edition for customers in the UK. While HWM is now a dealer, its foundations were solidified by racing prowess and after its founding in 1938, it went on to compete in the Formula One World Championship from 1951 to 1954.

The former racing marque is perhaps best known for its 1951 HWM-Alta, which was the first F1 car ever driven competitively by the legendary Sir Stirling Moss. The Caterham Seven HWM Edition takes inspiration from this car and is available to buy from £57,990.

Many nods to the past throughout exterior and interior

Each of the 19 models will be finished in HWM Green, scanned directly from the HWM-Alta racer. Other nods to the 1951 model include side panel louvres, bespoke nosecone grille, suspension wishbones, anti-roll bar, and headlight brackets finished in Retro Grey. There’s also a bespoke HWM Caterham nosecone badge and a centrally-mounted chrome fuel filler cap.

The heritage touches continue inside, with a hand-turning aluminium SuperSprint dashboard featuring SMITHS chrome dials, a solid metal master cut-off switch, and a polished wooden quick-release Moto-Lita steering wheel. Chrome is also used on the gear knob and handbrake, while there’s the option of leather or composite race seats to choose from, featuring the HWM logo.

Powering the Caterham Seven HWM Edition is a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre Duratec four-cylinder engine — used also on the Seven 420 — that produces 210 bhp at 7,600rpm. Expect it to spring from 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 136mph.

The exclusivity of the HWM Edition will be highlighted by a unique ‘1 of 19’ plaque in each car that is located on the passenger side of the dashboard.
