Motorists are being warned to clear their foggy windscreens and windows this winter before heading on to UK roads, with a hefty fine potentially heading their way if they don’t.

This is the advice of motoring experts at car lease comparison website leaseloco.com, who have warned that drivers with foggy and steamed-up windows will be breaking The Highway Code and risking a fine of up to £1,000, as well as three penalty points.

Drivers are being advised to wait before setting out on their journey, especially during dark winter mornings, as the obstruction to vision caused by fog and steam is more likely to lead to dangerous driving and an increase in accidents.

While patience is advised in this situation, experts say the best way to clear fog quickly is by putting on the air conditioning and opening a window slightly. An open window allows humid air to escape and fresh, cool air to enter.

Those who have cars with a defrost button for the windscreen should also put this on to speed up the process by drawing moisture from the air and reducing condensation.

Another solution is anti-fog spray, which you can apply to the windscreen and windows, creating a barrier on the glass and preventing condensation from building up.
