Porsche ends WEC involvement to focus on Formula E and North American IMSA
Porsche has revealed its future motorsport strategy, with the company ending its involvement in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) to fully focus on Formula E and the North American IMSA championship.
It is hoped that Porsche’s continued presence in Formula E, where it competes using the 99X Electric, will help the company gain valuable insights for its electric production sports cars.
This was reiterated by the Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, Thomas Laudenbach, who said: “We use motorsport as a development platform for future technology and to illustrate the potential of our sports cars,”
“With the Porsche 963 in the North American IMSA series and the Porsche 99X Electric in the Formula E World Championship, we want to continue to fight for overall victories in the future. That is our tradition and our focus.”
Porsche recently showcased its interior design on the new Cayenne Electric model, which is set to be fully revealed at the end of this year.
Porsche says its participation with the 963 in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship helps underline the importance of the North American market and endurance racing as a whole for the brand. The championship’s flagship race is the 24 Hours of Daytona, which is a draw stateside and continues to grow in popularity.
In the WEC, Porsche has had a successful year and currently sits in second place in the Hypercar Manufacturers’ standings with just the final race in Bahrain left to run. This follows last season’s runner-up finish, with the team missing out on the championship to Toyota by just two points.
Last month, Porsche announced the departure of António Félix da Costa, who has now joined the Jaguar Formula E team.
It’s been a different story in Formula E, though, with Porsche currently basking in the success of its 2024–25 Teams' Championship and Manufacturers' Championship titles.
Porsche has been competing in Formula E since 2019, winning 13 races and three world championship titles in that period.
