1965 MGB Roadster Driven by Sir Stirling Moss up for Auction
Leading online automotive auction site Car & Classic is currently auctioning a fully restored 1965 MGB Roadster rally driven by Sir Stirling Moss in the 1989 Pirelli Classic Marathon. The car was shipped over to its spiritual home in the UK and rebuilt in 1989 at the MG Show in Birmingham for Moss by marque specialists Brown & Gammons. In 2023, it was given a further refresh and represents an exciting opportunity for the winning bidder.
During its 1989 rebuild, the MGB was converted to right-hand drive with full rally spec before being pitted against rally royalty at the 1989 Pirelli Classic Marathon. Moss raced against Paddy Hopkirk, Roger Clarke and Ove Andersson, finishing first in class and third overall after 2000 gruelling miles across six countries.
Steeped in provenance, the MG comes complete with its 1989 FIA papers and logbook, the MG has had five subsequent UK owners since Sir Stirling’s effort with the car being used in numerous international events like the Tour Auto, where it finished first in class eight times and won the GT category on three occasions. It is currently eligible for a variety of historic motorsport events and is tailored to specialise in time road rallies.
The refresh between 2021 and 2023 by Chequered Flag Classics and JS Motorsport saw the MG receive a new 2.1-litre engine, gearbox, axle, suspension and brakes at a cost of £20,000. Special attention and care has been given and with just over 63,000 miles on the clock, there’s plenty of life left in the 1965 Roadster.
“This is a special opportunity to own a very well prepared classic rally car driven with success by one of the greatest drivers of all time,” said Car & Classic’s head of editorial Dale Vinten.
“YouTube footage of Sir Stirling Moss hustling this MG along the Stelvio Pass in 1989 simply adds to its huge appeal. And thanks to its recent comprehensive mechanical overhaul, this car is ready to begin the next chapter of its fascinating story.”
The auction concludes on November 16th with the bidding currently at £10,000.
