Sergio Aguero to drive for Porsche in one-off race
Former footballer to take part in new Formula E ‘Evo Sessions’ series
Former Manchester City and Argentina striker Sergio Aguero will swap the football pitch for the racing track as he gears up to drive a Porsche Formula E car in the new Evo Sessions event.
To prepare himself for the one-off race, Aguero has undergone racetrack training behind the wheel of some of Porsche’s road-going sports cars, as well as training using the e-sports works teams’ simulators. World champion Pascal Wehrlein is tasked with getting the Argentine up to speed with the Porsche 99X Electric, the same vehicle he pilots in the Formula E world championship.
Aguero is one of several celebrities and influencers that will participate in the one-off race on March 5 and 6 at a variant of the Miami Grand Prix track.

‘Iconic heritage, particularly in motorsport’
“This is absolutely crazy: from footballer to racing driver in one of the fastest racing cars in the world,” said Aguero. “Every child is familiar with Porsche. The brand represents an iconic heritage, particularly in motorsport. With this in mind, I am absolutely delighted and would like to thank everyone involved for this unique opportunity. I want to learn as much as possible on my journey to Miami, and to represent the team as well as possible when we get there.”
Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E at Porsche said: “Training a non-motorsport athlete for such a challenge in such a short time is a huge task for us as a team, but also for him as an athlete. The project is a bit mad, but also exciting and definitely innovative. We are looking forward to Miami and hope that the event can win a lot of new fans for our sport.”
Who else is competing in Evo Sessions?
Aguero is part of an 11 person lineup, with full driver and team pairings revealed over the next few weeks. All will be driving the new GEN3 Evo race cars which are capable of 0-60mph in just 1.82, 30% quicker than a current F1 car.
