New MG Cyberster revealed
In one of the most significant moments of the automotive year so far, iconic British brand MG, a company that can trace its history nearly a century back to 1924, has given the first appearance of its new sports car, the Cyberster, at a special preview event held at the MG Motor UK headquarters in Marylebone, London.
For a company acquired by Chinese owner SAIC not long after MG Rover subsided in 2005, the Cyberster represents a significant moment for MG as it is the first new convertible sports car to carry the famous badge since the MG F in 1995.
The concept version was initially revealed at Auto Shanghai in 2021, and reappeared in the Chinese city last month in more glorious detail. We are now able to see supercar-inspired features like the Kammback design rear and scissor doors. Yet, these new features combine with design highlights that were inspired by MGs heritage, such as a distinctive long bonnet, low nose and curvaceous surfaces.
Inside the futuristic cabin, there is a triple-screen layout across the dash, and an array of advanced driver technology, set behind a yoke-style steering wheel similarly seen in Teslas in recent years.
Specifications of the new model have yet to be detailed by MG however, there are suggestions that two powertrain options will be available. These will be a rear-wheel drive 309 bhp version and a four-wheel drive twin motor version with 536bhp, with many outlets believing them to cost £55,000 and £65,000 respectively. Pricier than a high-spec BMW Z4!
Energy will be sourced from a lithium-ion battery pack yet, capacity and range have also not been disclosed. The current MG 4 hatchback has up to 281 miles of range from its 64kWh battery, nonetheless as the Cyberster is almost certain to be lighter and more aerodynamic, closer to 500 miles of range is feasible, with MG claiming it will reach close to this figure.
From the launch in London, as well as a collection of photos, a short video of the Cyberster was published, with Carl Gotham, MG’s Advanced Design Director speaking about the creative process behind the car which brings the British marque back to its sporty roots.
When removing the cover, Gotham commented: “It is a special moment for all of us who have played a part in designing this unique car. The Cyberster will offer MG customers a striking, all-electric roadster which will be as exciting as MG sports cars of the past.
With the release of the electric Porsche Boxter also on the horizon, it will be interesting to see who fares better in the market next year.
The Cyberster is due to arrive in the UK and Europe in summer 2024. MG will announce more details shortly, including further details of its first public appearance this year.
