McLaren has announced that its next series supercar — McL 820 — is set to be released in 2027, marking the beginning of a new era for the British brand.
The announcement was marked with the unveiling of a kiwi bird statue in central London. The kiwi was first used by New Zealander Bruce McLaren and was a part of McLaren cars and branding from 1964 until 1980 before being replaced a year later.
The statue also showcases the new McLaren lettering, which will now be used across its automotive and racing divisions. The lettering, inspired by the sign above founder Bruce McLaren’s family service station in Remuera, Auckland, where he grew up, connects the brand with its beginnings, while looking towards the future.
The McL 820 name combines the McL prefix, which is inspired by McLaren’s motorsport heritage, with a performance-driven numerical identifier. The 820 part refers to the car’s 820PS of power output. Moving forward, this will be how McLaren names its new vehicles, with the brand saying it ‘unifies cars across McLaren Automotive and Racing’.
More details about the McL 820 will be released in the new year.
