Lego built Renault 5 Turbo 3E achieves 10,000 supporters

A little over a month ago, we brought you the story of British engineer Dave Collins’ mission to turn his Lego built Renault 5 Turbo 3E into an official product.

He needed 10,000 signatures on the Lego Ideas site for it to be in the running and even received the backing of Renault, who urged fans to get behind the endeavour.

Well, 44 days later, Collins now has his 10,000 signatures, smashing the 32 month window in which he needed to get them. Lego will now officially review the submission of his brick-built tribute to Renault’s electric supermini before deciding whether to put it into shops as an official product.

“Watching the numbers climb so quickly has been surreal”

Dave Collins, creator of the Lego Renault 5 Turbo 3E, said: “I knew there was something special about the car when I started building it, but I never expected this kind of reaction. Watching the numbers climb so quickly has been surreal – every time I checked, it felt like another big jump.

“What’s really struck me is how global it’s been. People from all over the world getting behind it, sharing it, voting for it – it’s turned into something far bigger than just my model. Hitting 10,000 supporters this quickly is incredible.”

Only 1,980 examples of the real life Renault 5 Turbo 3E will be sold from 2027 for £140,000 each — the number paying homage to the year that the first Renault Turbo was produced. Producing 555hp, the supermini can sprint from 0-60mph in under 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 170mph.

Those more interested in the model version, however, will get the opportunity to see Collins’ effort up close, with Renault displaying the 5 Turbo 3E recreation at its stand during this summer’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, from 9th-12th July.

The Festival of Speed will also mark the dynamic debut for the real life Renault 5 Turbo 3E, as well as appearances from the brand’s Twingo E-Tech and 4 E-Tech.

“It’s been brilliant to see so many people get behind it”

Adam Wood, Managing Director, Renault UK, said: “We all fell in love with Dave’s creation when we first saw it – and to see that love resonate around the world has been incredible. To reach the point where Dave’s model will now be reviewed for production is a fantastic achievement, and it says a lot about the connection people have with the Renault 5 and the excitement around the Renault 5 Turbo 3E.

“There’s a real sense of fun and creativity at the heart of this project, just as there is with the full-size version. It’s been brilliant to see so many people get behind it, and we’re really excited to see the reaction to it at Goodwood when it will be displayed – and celebrated - alongside the real car.”
