Hyundai Ioniq 5 becomes first electric car to win Auto Express Used Car of the Year

Those looking to dip into the second hand electric car market may be interested in this story, as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has become the first EV to win Auto Express Used Car of the Year.

Five years ago, the Ioniq 5 was named overall Car of the Year by Auto Express when new, and it seems as if, in non-typical EV style, its popularity has sustained the passing of time. It also picked up this year’s Best Used Electric Car title.

The Used Car Awards judges selected models based on how each model was rated when new, along with real-world feedback from owners through the Auto Express Driver Power survey, and how used values have held up. The Ioniq 5 was also praised for its design, interior space and high level of technology.

In terms of its capability as an EV, every version of the Ioniq 5 comes with over 200 miles of range, while later models are capable of more than 300 miles on a single charge. It will charge from 10 to 80 per cent in under 20 minutes on a rapid charger thanks to its 800V architecture.

Rich Ingram, Deputy Editor of Auto Express, called the Ioniq 5 a “brilliant all-rounder that shows just how good a used electric car can be” and noted that with prices from £13,000, it makes “a compelling case for going electric”.

There was more success for Hyundai in the awards, with the Tucson picking up the Best Mid-Size SUV accolade.
