Hydrogen-powered Alpine Alpenglow to hit the track at Spa

Alpine’s hydrogen-powered car, Alpenglow, will head to Belgium for a demonstration at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps endurance race on 11th May.

Ahead of the FIA World Endurance Championship round, the Alpenglow will complete three laps of the track alongside another hydrogen-powered car, ACO’s H24 concept. Toyota similarly demonstrated its GR H2 hydrogen concept at Le Mans last year.

The Alpenglow was originally unveiled at the Paris Motor Show as a concept car in late 2022, so for Alpine to make the effort to demonstrate it on track shows the investment that the brand has in showing potential future alternatives to battery power technology. The car we see in May is expected to have had a few design tweaks from how it looked as a concept car and ideas applied to the Alpenglow could feature on feature race cars and even road cars in the future.

There has also been talk about the introduction of a hydrogen class to Le Mans, although this was delayed - for a third time - until 2027 for safety-related reasons.

Nevertheless, Alpine is on something of a roll lately and also recently announced that it will present its A290 hot hatch at Le Mans in June. Unfortunately, in the world of Formula 1, the French brand isn’t enjoying the same kind of prolific success with the team currently bottom of the constructors’ standings.
