Global premiere for the MG3 hybrid supermini

MG3

Unveiled this week at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show was the all-new MG3, a hybrid supermini more efficient than its predecessor.

The last generation MG3 first came out way back in 2011 and the new third generation model features MG’s new Hybrid+ powertrain, which uses the combination of a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a 100kW electric motor to drive the front wheels. The total power output is 192bhp. MG says that despite the focus on efficiency, the Hybrid+ powertrain makes the MG3 the fastest accelerating hybrid model in its segment, with a 0-62mph time of 8 seconds flat - 1.7 seconds quicker than a Yaris. The top speed is around 106mph.

There are different drive modes which the hybrid system automatically switches between:

EV – Running on electric-only power for as long as charge allows
Series – Engine runs through to the generator, which powers the electric motor for drive
Series and Charge – Series driving, plus topping-up the battery when under low-load
Drive and Charge – Engine drives the wheels, while also charging the battery through the generator
Parallel – Both engine and electric motor power the wheels

There are also a further three manually selectable drive modes: Eco, Standard and Sport.

MG3 is both longer and wider than the model it replaces and has 293 litres of boot space.

From launch in the UK, potential customers will have the choice between two different specs - SE and Trophy. Both have a new cockpit design with two screens - a seven-inch digital instrument panel and a 10.25 infotainment screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are compatible as standard and the higher trim Trophy version features leather-style upholstery, keyless entry, a 360-degree parking camera and heated front seats and wheel. MG Pilot technology delivers an Advanced Driver Assistance System which includes lane keep assist with departure warning system, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and traffic jam assist.

Pricing for the MG3 is due to be announced this month and is expected to be around the £20,000 mark.
