As part of the fourth episode of its ‘A New Era’ docuseries, Bugatti delved deeper into its upcoming Tourbillon hypercar, showcasing its exposed chassis and what makes it tick.

Underneath the surface shows the results of a completely new platform, with the French brand starting afresh on the Tourbillon despite the raw power and success of the Chiron and Veyron before it. Bugatti said it was an opportunity to “rethink every element of the car, allowing the Tourbillon to emerge as something entirely unique”.

The most significant change for the Tourbillon is a brand new powertrain featuring a naturally aspirated V16 engine and three electric motors. To integrate this, Bugatti has fitted eight radiators at the front of the car, two on the outside to channel directly to the engine and some in the centre to direct airflow from the horseshoe grille to cool the cabin and electrical components.

The centrally housed, T-shaped battery is key to providing the electricity which sets the Tourbillon apart from its predecessors. It acts as a structural part of the monocoque and is positioned in the middle to provide balance. This 24hWh battery unit powers two 250kW electric motors on the front axle and a third on the rear. All in all, with the addition of the V16, this adds up to a staggering 1,775 bhp. For something a little more serene, there is the capability to do 37 miles in pure electric mode.

The Bugatti Tourbillon is undoubtedly going to change the game when released. Emilio Scervo, CTO of Bugatti Rimac, perhaps summed it up best saying, “Starting from scratch has allowed us to create something cohesive and thoroughly considered, as if crafted by one vision - a truly incomparable Bugatti.”
