New hybrid Porsche 911 revealed
The electrification of Porsche 911 gets a step closer with the arrival of the 911 GTS ‘T-Hybrid’ alongside an updated 992.2 911 range.
It is a big moment for Porsche with its famous 911 model now equipped with hybrid power for the first time in its history, part of a wider update across the 992 range. The new hybrid engine will be available for the Carrera GTS alongside a minor facelift and some changes to the interior. The launch of the new 911 follows significant changes to the Panamera, Taycan and Macan models in recent times
The Carrera GTS is powered by a newly developed 3.6-litre engine that is assisted by a hybrid system that uses a small electric motor within the turbocharger. There is also a new 55bhp motor in the eight-speed gearbox and when added all together the total power output is 534bhp, enough for a 0-62mph time of 3 seconds and a top speed of 194mph. The new system is heavier and pushes the GTS up by 50kg to 1,600kg in total, though upgrades to suspension and wider rear tyres should go some way to combatting that.
There are several styling changes to catch the eye too, with LED matrix headlights now standard as well as a new front bumper. The rear has a refreshed light signature, rear grille and new standard exhaust system, while an optional Aero Package is available for £2,342 which adds a front spoiler, side sills and fixed rear wing for even further improved performance.
Looking inside, the 911 has a completely digital rev counter for the first time as part of the fully digital driver’s display. A 12.6-inch curved digital instrument cluster, seen also in the Panamera and Cayenne, is placed next to a 10.9-inch infotainment screen which houses driver assistance systems and drive modes. There’s also room for another first, with an engine start button replacing the twist ignition from the previous 911.
For something not quite as daring, the standard Carrera retains its 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine but has the addition of a new intercooler and turbochargers to increase its output to 389bhp. This gives the Carrera a 0-62mph time of 4.1 seconds. The new Carrera can be ordered as a Coupé and Cabriolet with rear-wheel drive and prices start at just under £100,000. Deliveries are likely to begin towards the end of the summer.
For the 911 Carrera GTS, all-wheel drive and the Targa body variant are also available and it is available for £132,600. It is unlikely to be seen on the roads until 2025 at least.
