This 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 from Collecting Cars can take you Back to the Future
Forty years after the release of Back to the Future, there is now the chance to own the car made famous by the film - a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12.
The 1980s automotive icon is now live for bidding on Collecting Cars’ global auction platform, and will close on Sunday 3rd August.
By pure coincidence, I happened to see one out in the wild earlier today, and at the time of writing, the DeLorean is currently at £40,000 after 26 bids. It goes without saying that the winning bidder will more or less be guaranteed entry to any classic car show of their choice for the rest of their days.
Life story
Finished with brushed stainless steel bodywork and featuring the famous gullwing doors that made it a cultural phenomenon, this DeLorean began life in Pennsylvania and wasn’t imported to the UK until 2015. It also only has 11,891 miles and has been serviced as recently as last month.
Under the rear engine cover is a naturally aspirated 2.8-litre V6, which delivers 130 bhp to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. As well as retaining its original black leather interior, this example includes factory equipment like air conditioning, electric windows and an AM/FM cassette stereo.
“The shape alone brings back a flood of memories”
Edward Lovett, founder of Collecting Cars, said: "The DeLorean is one of those rare cars that has leapt from the screen into the collective imagination. For many people, the shape alone brings back a flood of memories – from the original films to seeing it take on a new life on stage. To offer one during the 40th anniversary celebrations feels very special, and we’re expecting it to resonate with collectors of all ages."
