An example of a 1957 Ferrari 335 S, widely regarded as one of the greatest Ferraris of all time, is one to look out for and see up close at this summer’s Salon Privé Concours at Blenheim Palace after being entered into the event by an American collector.

Esteemed Motorsport Career

Chassis number ‘0674’ had an esteemed motorsport career where it was driven by a who’s who from the automotive world, including Stirling Moss, Peter Collins, Mike Hawthorn and Wolfgang von Trips. Originally beginning life as a 290 MM Spyder Scaglietti, a series of upgrades were given to the car throughout the decades before it became the 335 S it remains today.

Pierre Bardinon’s Collection

After a rigorous motorsport career, it spent 40 years as part of notable Ferrari collector Pierre Bardinon’s collection. Bardinon sent the car to Modena for a full restoration and subsequently used it on the private track he had on the grounds of his home. Just before it became Bardinon’s it had previously been owned by Luigi Chinetti’s NART operation, and was entered for the famous Cuban Grand Prix best known for the kidnapping of five-time Formula 1 world champion Juan Manuel Fangio.

Current Ownership and Auction

It found its way to its current American collector owner after they purchased the car at the 2005 Artcurial Retromobil Auction for nearly £25 million and has since been showcased at various events around the world, including Finali Mondiali Daytona and the Ferrari Classiche Concours.

Film Connection

Michael Mann also spent time examining this particular 335 S before filming the ‘Ferrari’ feature film and had replicas of it built by the production team. Scenes in the film were based around the 1957 season that ‘0674’ starred in, particularly the Mille Miglia race in which it came second.

Salon Privé Concours at Blenheim Palace runs from 28-31 August 2024.
