FEATURE | The Story of the VW Golf GTI - Mk1 to Mk8.5
In 1985, The Times newspaper coined the phrase 'Hot Hatch' when writing about the VW Golf GTI. The writers were most likely referring to the impending arrival of the second generation of Golf GTI, following the very well-received Mk1, which had been on sale for 11 years prior, since 1976.
Zero SR - 70 Horsepower has never felt so good
A common misconception about electric cars and bikes is that they're less fun than petrol equivalents. But, indeed, for the Zero at least, that's simply not true.
1300 Miles on a Ducati Multistrada V4S - Breakfast, Brunch and Dinner
Since 2003, the Multistrada has been Ducati's take on all-purpose motorcycling, having observed competitors' efforts from the likes of BMW with its GS models. The ethos behind the model and its name is that it is a bike capable of taking on all roads and even bigger adventures. I decided to take the Multistrada V4S on an adventure for Breakfast, Brunch and Dinner in the three capital cities of the UK.
Mini Cooper SE Sport - Praise be for the Small EV
The second-generation Mini Cooper Electric has arrived, and it's an all-new enterprise in almost every way. It's an entirely new car, with a new smaller size, and it's even built in a new location outside of the UK. John Marcar tests the range-topping Mini Cooper SE Sport to see what's new and if it retains its charm.
REVIEW | Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 - An exciting look into the future
For the past month, I've been riding the latest Royal Enfield offering, the Shotgun 650. It's the fifth bike I've tested and reviewed from the brand since January 2022.
Happiness is a set of Steel Wheels and Falken AT3WA All-Terrain Tyres
We've modified our Land Rover Defender L633 by removing the alloy wheels and road tyres and replacing them with steel wheels and Falken Wildpeak AT3WA All-Terrain Tyres to see how capable it is in the muddy stuff.
Review | Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE - All Form Over Function?
Review of the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE: combines classic style with modern performance but faces weight and price issues.
BMW X7 M60 - Still better than a Range Rover?
The latest X7 I have to test is the new 2024 M60 variant, and by quite some margin, the new car is considerably more expensive, ludicrously more powerful and even more garish in its styling than its predecessor. The X7 M60 is powered by BMW M's 4.4 Litre TwinPower Turbo V8 petrol engine, pushing out 530 hp and 730Nm of torque.
Jaguar F-Type R75 Coupe Plus - The Final Roar
Since 1922, Jaguar has been a manufacturer of sports cars, such as the Jaguar XK120, C-Type, D-Type, and E-Type. The brand has been associated with competition, victory, and engines that roar unapologetically. But we're now at a turning point where, in the not-too-distant future, Jaguars will roar no more. To explore this poignant fact, I decided to recap on the final iteration of the Jaguar F-Type, the V8 Supercharged R75 Coupe Plus.
Maeving RM1S Review - The Stunning British EV motorcycle just got even better
The Maeving RM1S has evolved from being a stylish EV motorcycle commuter confined to the 30mph roads to one that can now keep up with faster traffic on the dual carriageways. John Marcar was invited to the launch of the new Maeving RM1S in London to see what the new bike was like.
VW Passat R-Line 1.5 eTSI - Effortlessly Good
Since the early 1970s, the Volkswagen Passat has been a familiar sight on streets worldwide. For the past 50 years, Passats have been owned, driven, and enjoyed by everyone from tradespeople to multi-millionaires. The Passat is synonymous with an entire catalogue of daily uses and, as a result, has been a familiar site outside schools, on family driving holidays, in executive office block car parks and parked with pride on just about every residential road in the country.
The BMW 5 Series is now £100k! - Review | BMW 550e (2024 G60)
In the UK, we have a very unusual way of measuring inflation. Sure, we could calculate inflation rates according to the Bank of England records, but that would be far too easy, comprehensive and sensible. Instead, we measure inflation by calculating the year-by-year price increase of a small chocolate frog, affectionately known as The Freddo Bar. Patriotic Brits have been tracking the price of the humble Freddo in accordance with inflation, and the results don't make for good reading. But I've found a new scale of inflation reporting. - While it's not chocolate, it is definitely equally recognisable: It's the BMW 5 Series.
Winter Riding | Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 - Review
At the time of writing (Winter 2024), we're still a little while away from what many would classify as 'riding season' here in Britain; however, when a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 rolls out of the back of a van for a press loan, the 'let's be sensible and stay inside' part of the brain very quickly becomes consumed by the 'hooray, a new motorcycle to ride!' part—I'm not entirely sure if neurologists have identified a scientific term for either of these emotions when related to motorcycling specifically.
The Ultimate 3 Porsche Garage - (None of which is a 911)
A sports car, a performance EV, and an SUV roll into a race paddock—it sounds like the opening to a strange joke or limerick, but I recently had the opportunity to test three of Porsche's most popular cars back to back on the surrounding roads of the Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, and it got me thinking: Might I have found the ultimate 3-Car Garage?
Review | Maserati Grecale - Modena The SUV with Motor Racing Heritage
Shamefully, I've spent very little time behind the wheel of a Maserati, but that all changed when the kind folks at Graypaul Maserati Nottingham invited me to their showroom on a Friday afternoon with the promise of a new car for the weekend.
Who is BYD? | Feature Review - BYD SEAL Excellence AWD
This week, I finally got my hands on a car I've been excited to drive since learning of its arrival in the UK. It's a fast, sleek, and new EV attempting to take on the likes of Tesla, Kia, and Hyundai in the EV market. The BYD SEAL is likely to be a car seen and remembered as a turning point for the BYD brand and for many more, perhaps even the first BYD model that people take note of.
Dacia Duster Bi-Fuel Review | 730 miles for under £100
The Dacia Duster Extreme (TCe 100 4x2 Bi-Fuel) that I have on test has an on-the-road retail price tag of £20,945, which is pretty remarkable in terms of new cars, specifically small SUVs. Being the 'Extreme' model, it is also packed with safety, comfort and practicality features as standard.
Kia EV9 ‘Air’ | The 7-Seat eSUV just became £11,000 cheaper
Kia is marketing the EV9 Air as the entry-level model in the range. However, I think it stands out as the one to pick. The Air is powered by a 99.8kWh battery and a 318kW motor, as found in the GT Line S. Except instead of having two motors driving all four wheels, it has one motor that powers the two rear wheels only. The loss of a motor does, of course, reduce performance; however, it's still no slouch, and crucially, what it loses in power, it makes up for in range.
CCM Roadster - Appease Your Inner Child
So, you've paid the £20k bill, and your custom bike has been delivered; what next? Is it just a pretty thing to look at, or does it actually ride well? The answer is no. It doesn't ride well; it rides brilliantly - and most crucially, it's serious fun.
Review | Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 - The Fuelled Finale
I frequently reference the past when writing about a car I'm reviewing. I consider the model's predecessors and the brand's history. I work through timelines of designs, powertrains, and the influence the particular model might have had in a broader market over the years. Not this time, though, because the story that comes with the Cayman GTS 4.0 is more interesting and, dare I say, poignant when we look ahead to the future instead.
