Would an ugly EV charger decrease the value of your house?
As convincing people to switch to electric cars remains an issue, there is now another factor to consider before taking the plunge.
A recent post on X highlighted the importance of having a home charger as an electric vehicle owner, and you could previously be forgiven for thinking that charging times and prices were the only considerations when installing an electric charge point at home.
However, new research from premium EV charging brand Andersen has revealed that 56% of millennials are now concerned that an ugly charger could knock thousands of pounds off the value of their house.
The survey was given to 1,010 UK motorists, with 70% of millennial and Gen Z drivers highlighting the importance of how a home EV charger looks. This compares to just 39% of those aged 65 and over who were asked the same question.
“Homeowners care deeply about design and kerb appeal”
David Martell, CEO of Anderson, highlighted the correlation between EV chargers and kerb appeal.
“As EV adoption accelerates, it’s clear that the next generation of homeowners care deeply about design and kerb appeal,” said Martell, “Millennial and Gen Z motorists don’t just want a charger that performs well, they want one that enhances the appearance and value of their home. That’s why the industry must raise its game, focusing on aesthetics as much as technology.”
Andersen has tried to combat this with more aesthetically pleasing chargers, with a range of different colours and finish combinations, including metal and wood.
However, for those houses already with EV charging infrastructure, the survey indicated that 82% of 18–24-year-olds said its appearance would influence a home purchase.
