Volkswagen’s best selling Tiguan model goes electric in 2027

The new electric Volkswagen ID. Tiguan SUV will succeed the ID.4 and ID.5 models in 2027, with VW calling it ‘one of the brand’s most important electric models for the years ahead’.

Featuring a redesigned exterior, high quality interior and newly developed cockpit with a new co-driver display, the electric model will sit alongside petrol, diesel and hybrid-powered Tiguans when it is released early next year. The Tiguan is currently Volkswagen’s best-selling model, while its ID.4 and ID.5 models are among its most successful electric offerings. VW will no doubt be expecting a smash hit with this one.

Electric Powertrain Options

The ID. Tiguan’s range, towing capacity and overall performance will depend on which battery the customer chooses. There are two Rear Wheel Drive versions offering 140kW, 187bhp and 58 kWh battery, and 210 kW, 282 bhp, and a 77 kWh battery

For those looking for the best VW has to offer, there is a potential of up to 372 miles of range and 2,000kg towing capacity with the 220kW, 294bhp 4MOTION all-wheel drive variant.

Exterior Design

VW has gone with a different exterior design for the ID. Tiguan, switching the ‘softer crossover’ designs seen on predecessors for a stronger, ‘powerful’ SUV silhouette from its Pure Positive playbook. The brand says it wants the new model to look ‘like a vehicle from the premium segment’ and will also return to the classic pull-style door handles.

Interior

Inside, the premium feel continues with a blend of lighting, design, materials and colour schemes to create an atmosphere ‘reminiscent of the next segment above’. For the first time, the cockpit boasts a (12-inch) co-driver display not visible to the driver, which can be paired with Bluetooth headphones. This sits alongside the new 10-inch driver display and central 15-inch infotainment display.

Important functions like air conditioning, audio volume and track/radio station changing are operated by using physical buttons on the centre console, while two inductive charging points sit below. Another new feature is the multifunction steering wheel with physical buttons instead of touch controls.

A nice touch from Volkswagen comes in the form of the new ‘Retro’ displays, which reimagine displays from VW from days gone by like the Golf I, Golf II Country, Golf IV, Tiguan I, Race Touareg and Beetle.

The front seats are electrically adjustable with massage, memory and ventilation functions, and contain a high-end 480W Harman Kardon sound system. A panoramic sunroof is available as an optional extra.

Tech & Storage

Driver assistance comes in the form of one-pedal driving and the new Connected Travel Assist, which enables lane changing on motorways and stops the car automatically at red traffic lights.

There’s also the Digital Key, which can be transferred to family, friends and colleagues, and enables the car to be unlocked, locked and started using the VW app on a compatible smartphone.

In terms of storage, 534 litres is available in the rear, while a frunk gives an extra 32 litres of space. Levels of functionality, comfort and sportiness will depend on which of the four trims — Trend, Life, Style and R-Line — the customer chooses.

Price & Release Date

Sales of the ID. Tiguan will initially begin in Germany and other European countries on October 13, with prices starting at 42,695 euros, and a predicted £36,000 to £38,000 in the UK, where it will hit showrooms in early 2027.
