Saudi Arabia unveils plans for new Grand Prix circuit from 2027
On the week of its annual Grand Prix, Saudi Arabia unveiled its potential new Qiddiya racing circuit in a series of computer-generated images, which features a 20-storey high first corner and swimming pool overlooking the track. If all goes to plan, the track could be ready by 2027.
The Saudi Arabia Grand Prix has been part of the Formula 1 calendar since 2021 and has been held at a street circuit in the city of Jeddah. A ten year contract to host races in Saudi was agreed in 2020 with Formula 1.
The new circuit would be part of a bigger construction project around 30 miles from Riyadh featuring concert space, Six Flags theme park and leisure facilities. Saudi Arabia’s investment into the world of sport shows no signs of slowing down after hosting large boxing events in recent years, as well as the Dakar Rally and the rapidly growing Saudi Pro Football League.
Designed by ex-F1 driver Alex Wurz and circuit designer Herman Tilke, the proposed track features 21 corners and 108 metres of elevation change.
Abdullah Aldawood, Managing Director of Qiddiya Investment Company said: "The Speed Park Track will be a true embodiment of Qiddiya's power of play philosophy and position Qiddiya City as the home of Saudi motorsport and one of the world's leading motorsport venues.
"Visitors and spectators will be treated to one of the most unique race experiences in the world with a pioneering track that will be ready to host some of the world's biggest motorsport events.”
It has previously been stated by the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation that, if allowed, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would be keen to host two races per season. Therefore, the Jeddah street circuit may not be dispensed with just yet.
The 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix takes place this Saturday, 9 March.
