Morgan XP-1 Development Vehicle Gives Glimpse into Electrified Future
Morgan Motor Company has shared details of ‘XP-1’, a new development vehicle that will potentially shape its future as a company that produces electric cars. The experimental prototype - which has been in the works for the last year - will act as the blueprint for later cars as Morgan begins its EV journey.
While the prototype is not set to enter any form of production, the team of engineers at Morgan’s Malvern base have based the vehicle on the Super 3’ and will use it to improve driving characterisation, and powertrain development. The car will also be the guinea pig used for learning and training Morgan staff about everything EV.
For the next couple of years, XP-1 will be tested rigorously and evolve as the latest technology and features are added throughout the process.
The battery, motor and inverter combination are already a significant step for the Worcestershire based company as they represent Morgan’s first powertrain, internal combustion or battery electric. It can be calibrated by Morgan’s engineers to create a range of driving modes and a mix of driving characteristics. A full vehicle toolchain - developed in-house - has also been created to help aid with the identification of suitable component combinations for the powertrain, helping the company prepare for any future requirements it may need.
Electric vehicles are notoriously heavy due to the battery required and this is the reason Morgan, knowing being lightweight is a key part of its 114 year history, has created its own powertrain in order to carry on that legacy. Subsequently, the XP-1’s weight is comparable to the petrol powered Super 3 it is based on. The XP-1 also has fast charging capability and is the first ever Morgan to be fitted with an electronic park brake.
Morgan will now begin to train its workforce in EV production methods in preparation for the company’s future direction. High voltage systems handling and installation of charging infrastructure will all be covered as well as the building of EVs themselves. The XP-1 will make appearances at future events as the brand hopes to edge the idea of electrified Morgan’s into petrolhead’s consciousness, without abandoning the values and ethos the brand was built on.
Matt Hole, Chief Technical Officer, Morgan Motor Company, said: “…As we embark on our electric journey, this prototype will become a focal point of the engineering and design process, providing a wealth of insight and helping to build up our in-house EV capability. We are in no doubt that we can ensure future electric Morgan sports cars retain the core appeal of our current range, meaning they are fun to drive, lightweight, handcrafted and bespoke. We will be relentless in our pursuit of preserving these characteristics for our customers for generations to come. Because it is not tied to a product, XP-1 provides the unique ability for our audience to join us throughout this exciting learning phase, and we look forward to sharing future updates over the coming months.”
