The new Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 is pure V8 powered luxury

Unveiling at Monterey Car Week

At Monterey Car Week in California, the world was shown the latest Mercedes to receive the Maybach treatment. The result is the Mercedes‑Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series which the German marque refers to as “the sportiest model in the Maybach brand’s history”. Immediately becoming one of the most luxurious roadsters on the market, it joins Maybach efforts like the S-Class, GLS SUV and EQS EV in heading into production.

Exterior Design and Customisation

Two different liveries are on offer known as Red Ambience (cover picture) and White Ambience which both incorporate a two-tone metallic black colour over red and white, respectively. The black bonnet is available upon request with the Maybach pattern incorporated in graphite grey uni. The same patterning is also seen on the soft top fabric.

The grille has illuminated contours and MAYBACH lettering has been integrated into the top. Luxurious touches have been applied subtly, with the inside of the headlights finished with high-quality accenting in rose gold. Chrome has been used to finish the windscreen frame and sill cladding, while the car sits on 21-inch forged wheels in a 5-hole or multi-spoke design.

Interior Luxury and Technology

Inside, luxurious crystal white nappa leather features on the door panels, centre console and two seats. A new floral design has been used in the upholstery and the seat backs are finished in contrasting silver chrome. There is a digital instrument display and the adjustable central screen comes with Maybach-specific start-up animations and display styles.

Powertrain and Performance

The Mercedes-Maybach SL is powered by the same AMG 4.0-litre biturbo engine putting out 577bhp similarly seen on the standard SL. It also has a smooth-shifting 9G‑TRONIC automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. At the same time, the Maybach touch has been applied for various features to give a quieter and more comfortable driving experience, including a noise-optimised exhaust system, insulation and absorption package and comfort-driven suspension set up.

Maybach’s Vision for the SL 680

“Our customers love something special. The Mercedes‑Maybach SL Monogram Series adds a sporty two-seater to our model family for the ultimate open-air pleasure. It combines a dynamic driving experience with everything that characterises a Mercedes-Maybach: excellent craftsmanship, exquisite design details and fine materials.”
Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes-Maybach, Mercedes-Benz Group AG

While there is no word on the price yet, expect a Mayback SL 680 to cost north of £200,000. Mercedes says it will begin to roll out the car in Europe during Spring 2025, with other markets to follow afterwards.
