This five-car Ferrari collection is worth over £20 million
In the last 12 months, we’ve seen collections from Bernie Ecclestone and Mansour Ojjeh hit the market, and while this group of cars may not be as extensive, it is one of the finest, rarest and historically significant five-car Ferrari collections available to buy today.
‘Scuderia ’89 – The Pursuit for Paddle’ is a collection that contains some of the most iconic paddle-shift transmission Ferraris, including a racing prototype, F1 pioneer driven by Gerhard Berger and iconic poster-worthy supercars.
The collection is being offered by Furlonger, one of the UK’s leading specialists of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Bugattis, and is only able to be purchased as a group. All five together are estimated to be worth in excess of £20 million.
Let’s take a look at each of the five cars in more detail…
1988 Ferrari 639 F1 (Chassis #106)
Chassis #106 was created as the second of two factory prototypes to test Ferrari’s all-new Tipo 035 3.5-litre V12 engine and the first semi-automatic paddle-shift transmission — something now widespread in modern race and road cars.
It signalled a huge technological leap forward for Ferrari in F1 and was retained by the Prancing Horse’s factory from 1988 until April 1999, before becoming the only Tipo 639 to go into private ownership. Extensive works to maintain and keep it fully drivable have been undertaken by Ferrari Classiche, and it has been recently showcased at both Goodwood and Silverstone.
1989 Ferrari 640 F1 (Chassis #110)
This Ferrari 640 was the first Formula 1 car to use a paddle-shift transmission in the World Championship, and was driven by Gerhard Berger during the 1989 season in the Canadian, German, British, Mexican and American Grands Prix.
After its racing stints, Chassis #110 was retired as a static display vehicle before being returned to Ferrari Classiche for a complete restoration. It has been reunited with Berger in recent times, with the Austrian driver taking it for a few laps around the Goodwood Circuit at the 2024 Members’ Meeting. Last year, it was awarded the prestigious Chairman’s Trophy at the 2025 Pebble Beach Concours.
1989 Ferrari F40
Widely regarded as the greatest ever supercar, this Ferrari F40 example is one of just 30 examples of its period and has covered just under 15,000 miles.
While it has been reverted to its original factory spec for road use, there is also the opportunity to restore it to its race spec, which is how this example became the most successful racing F40 in the UK. Race specification would also make it eligible for events like the Historic Le Mans and 6 Hours of Spa.
1996 Ferrari F50
Offered with 14,000 miles on the clock and an extensive list of original accessories, including both roofs, travel case and tool kit, this F50 is one of only 25 that were supplied to the UK. It is powered by a 4.7-litre V12 engine that can trace its roots to the very unit from the 639 and 640 F1 cars.
1998 Ferrari F355 Spider
With only 5,500 miles on the clock, this F355 Spider is one of just 139 supplied to the UK market in 1998. Its significance in Ferrari history cannot be understated, as it was the first ever road car to feature a paddle-shift transmission. The use of F1-derived technology made it the benchmark for all supercars at the time.
Simon Furlonger, Founder and Managing Director at Furlonger Specialist Cars, said: “We’ve assembled some of the most iconic and significant race and road cars in Ferrari’s history. These models define the dawn of a new era, when Ferrari harnessed its Formula 1 know-how for its road cars like never before. And of course, the 639 and 640 laid the foundations for the dominant Schumacher years that would follow in the early 2000s.”
