Defender reveals road legal 2026 Dakar Rally-winning model
Defender has unveiled a Design Preview Model of its latest iteration at The Quail by The Peninsula, A Motorsports Gathering as part of California’s Monterey Car Week.
The Defender Dakar is a road legal evolution of the Defender D7X‑R, which won the 2026 Dakar Rally on its debut seven months ago. Featuring a wider track, increased ride height and rally suspension, this is no ordinary Defender and one that is even more capable off road.
The race-bred evolution of the D7X-R — which was an evolution of the Defender OCTA — has several features from the Dakar-winning model, retaining the body artchitecture, transmission, diveline and most importantly, the same 4.4‑litre twin turbo V8 engine producing 626bhp and 750Nm of torque.
The Dakar will be distinguishable from other Defender models at first glance with a number of rally-inspired exterior details. These include roof‑mounted light pods, a fixed metal roof, carbon fibre raised air intakes, carbon fibre bonnet, extended wheel arches with exposed rivets, tailgate blanking plate and signature mud flaps. Throw in an enhanced metal front undershield and underbody protection and you’ll be ready to take on the dunes yourself.
A range of colour options will be available on release, including signature Dakar Sand body and Yanbu Turquoise roof seen on the header photo, which is inspired by the race‑winning D7X‑R’s livery. There’s also the option of Matte Protective Film with Narvik Black and Alaska White.
Inside, the Dakar features a 2+2 seating configuration with specially designed race seats on the first row, and optioning four point racing harnesses. Rally inspired details combine with luxury throughout the interior, while there’s space for a spare wheel and air compressor.

Mark Cameron, Manager Director of Defender said:“We’ve pushed our engineers to go further than they’ve ever gone before. First, we evolved Defender OCTA into D7X‑R and then we asked: could we make the Dakar Rally‑winning D7X‑R road legal? The result is the Defender Dakar.”
There will only be a limited number of Defender Dakars available on release, with those lucky to be given an allocation after registering their interest able to reserve their car in early 2027. Further technical details will be revealed at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.
