Maserati has unveiled its latest track creation to the world at the 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium. The beautiful looking Maserati GT2 signals a return to the world of GT competitions for the Italian brand and will make its debut towards the end of the 2023 Fanatec GT2 European Series. Maserati has previous success thanks to the domination of the MC12 between 2005 and 2010.

The unveiling comes after an intensive series of tests following its announcement in March, the car is a result of a creative and design partnership between the Maserati Innovation Lab, the Centro Stile Maserati and the Maserati dynamic simulator. It draws on the MC20 from 2020, using the Nettuno V6 engine, which incorporated F1 technology, as its base and but in the words of Maserati, ‘taking it to the extreme.’

Davide Grasso, Maserati CEO, commented: “Our story began and developed from the track to the road. The decision to return to track racing forms part of a thorough strategic framework, inaugurated this year with the debut in Formula E, to which we have now added our return to the world of GT competitions.”

Of course, Maserati’s entrance into Formula E is no coincidence. The recent GranTurismo Folgore was available in a 100% electric capacity and by 2025, all Maserati models will also be available in full-electric versions. Finally, by 2030, the entire Maserati range will be electric, adaptingto futuree challenges.

But for now, petrol still remains in Maserati’s thinking.  After its debut at the end of 2023 in the Fanatex GT European Series, the car will compete in the entire 2024 season and is available to private teams and drivers for use. Beyond that, who knows, but the car has been designed with a variety of events in mind whether it be championships or individual events, so I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of it in the next couple of years as it develops further.
