Hyundai has shown a glimpse of its future by revealing its hydrogen-powered concept, the Initium.

Initium, meaning ‘beginning’ or ‘first’ in Latin, has been chosen to reflect the brand’s ‘status as a hydrogen energy pioneer’ and commitment to sustainability. The concept is the culmination of around 27 years of hydrogen technology development, with Hyundai also launching its HTWO hydrogen value chain business brand earlier this year as efforts to make it a reality ramp up.

It is, of course, an SUV. However, it shows off Hyundai’s new design language - ‘Art of Steel’ - and hints at what’s to come from the brand’s upcoming FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) that will succeed the Nexo in 2025.

The boxy design is similar to that seen on the Ioniq 5 and Santa Fe, although subtle touches have been made to separate it from the others. The Initium sits on 21-inch aerodynamic wheels and has a roof rack for those with ‘urban and outdoor lifestyles.’ Boxy LED lights help it stand out in the darkness, while pronounced skid plates prepare it for the rigours of off-roading.

Powered by a single electric motor, the Initium has an output of 201bhp and an approximate range of around 404 miles. Compared to the Nexo, it is an improvement of 40bhp and 24 miles, respectively.

The Initium includes an FCEV-specific route planner that plots an optimal route and finds charging stations along the way. This remains a big challenge in the UK, with only six hydrogen refuelling stations currently available to use.

There hasn’t been confirmation yet as to whether the Nexo successor will be sold in the UK, but Hyundai insists it is committed to the potential of hydrogen, so we’ll have to wait and see.
