Electrogenic Launches Classic Mini EV Conversion Kit

In a recent article on Driven, Electrogenic was revealed to be working alongside the British Army to convert some of their military vehicles into electric. At last month's Salon Privé London, we came across Electrogenic as it showcased some of its vehicles to automotive fans in person. For all classic Mini owners who want their cars future-proofed, we may have some welcome news for you.

Who are Electrogenic?

Electrogenic made its name sympathetically converting beautiful classic cars to all-electric drive and continues to carry out handcrafted bespoke conversation for individual clients at its headquarters. The British company, based in Oxford, develop tailor-made electric vehicle drivetrain systems. These drivetrain systems, known as ‘Powered by Electrogenic’,  delivered easy-to-install ‘drop-in’ EV kits for the world’s most iconic vehicles. The revolutionary ‘plug and play’ kit range includes options for the Land Rover Defender, classic Porsche 911, and Jaguar E-Type, and is offered around the world via a rapidly expanding international dealer network.

The company is led by Steve Drummond, who brings with him three decades of engineering and finance experience in both the energy and climate change sectors and expert mechanic, Ian Newstead.

Mini Conversion Kit

News just in is that Electrogenic is expanding its range of conversion kits with its most accessible yet: a ‘plug and play’ solution to easily electrify the classic Mini.

The kit converts the automotive icon to a fun, clean and reliable electric drive from £15,000 plus VAT.

The Details

The EV technology is completely pre-assembled and pre-tested on a replacement heritage front subframe that simply replaces the old subframe with its petrol engine. It features a 60bhp, 135Nm water-cooled motor, delivering 1,000 Nm of instant electric torque to the wheels through a fixed ratio drivetrain.

Powered by 20kWh of brand new, densely packed OEM grade batteries, also pre-mount on the subframe and all wired in, the electrified Mini packs 80 miles of in-town range. This figure is likely to fall significantly on faster roads however, an extended-range version, with an added second battery inside the boot, will be offered at a later date. The Type 2 charge port is also pre-mounted and can be accessed through a range of replacement front grilles.

How does it work?

Electrogenic’s research and development team has also ensured the kit is as easy to install as possible; fitting can be carried out by any qualified mechanic. The package is sold as a pre-tested, fully assembled kit, entirely incorporated into a replacement front subframe.

The installer simply bolts in the new subframe assembly and wires up to the throttle and dashboard. The charging socket is also incorporated neatly into the new subframe assembly, so there’s no high-voltage wiring at all.

As with all Electrogenic conversions, no modification is required to the structure of the Mini, so like the Electrogenic Porsche 911, it’s fully reversible.

The Mini kit will be offered via Electrogenic’s global network of installer partners from Autumn 2023.
