Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Display at Beaulieu
A new temporary display featuring iconic vehicles from Doctor Who is to be unveiled at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. Open to visitors from November 23rd, the collection marks the 60th anniversary of the much-loved British series.
As a huge fan of the show and founder member of the Doctor Who Restoration Team, Beaulieu’s Lord Montagu was instrumental in bringing the collection to Hampshire. He said ‘I am delighted to be hosting this display of Doctor Who props in the programme’s 60th anniversary year. I am sure it will bring great joy to our visitors and bring back memories of watching the Saturday evening episodes, perhaps for some from behind the sofa.’
Bessie, Third Doctor Jon Pertwee’s yellow roadster, heads the line-up. Having appeared regularly in the 1970s, as well as making single appearances in later series, it has become synonymous with the Doctor’s adventures in the classic era.
Also on display will be the Whomobile, a custom-designed vehicle created for the Doctor by the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce. It made its first appearance in episodes broadcast in January and February 1974 as well as in Jon Pertwee’s final appearance as the Third Doctor.
Not entirely car related, although they do move on wheels, an authentic Dalek will be displayed having been part of the classic series episodes of Doctor Who on all but one occasion.
As well as special collections, Beaulieu has also played host to Bonhams auctions since 2000 and recently signed a new 5-year extension to remain part of the International Autojumble. Held every September, the Beaulieu Sale brings together an extensive selection of classic vehicles as well as motoring themed collectors’ items.
The display can be seen until the end of February 2024 and is included in a general admission ticket to Beaulieu which already includes entry to the National Motor Museum, World of Top Gear, On Screen Cars, Palace House, Secret Army exhibition, and Beaulieu Abbey, its grounds and gardens. Tickets are available here.
