The Caterham Seven 360R has been built using exterior and interior components from a Puma HC2 helicopter and pays tribute to the aircraft.

Caterham and the RAF have unveiled a one-off car which will be auctioned off for charity through Collecting Cars. It will be on display for the first time at this weekend’s British Grand Prix and is estimated to sell for over £100,000.

Unique Components from Puma HC2 Helicopter

The Caterham Seven 360R has been built using components from a Puma HC2 helicopter (XW232) that entered service in 1972 and operated around the world. Having recently reached the end of its service life, Caterham and those at RAF Benson decided to create a special tribute to its servicemen and women with the external finish matching how it looked as an aircraft. The remaining panels have been pained in matching NATO Green while the chassis is finished in Desert Sand. Aluminium from the aircraft’s tail boom and doors have also been used as panels for the Seven’s exterior.

Interior Details and Features

Inside, details from the Puma are matched in the Seven’s interior. There is quilted soundproofing on the door panels, tunnel top and carbon fibre seats while the chopper’s evacuation instructions remain stitched into the lining. The dashboard is in satin black and features an aircraft navigation clock in the centre as well as a helicopter-style three-stage ignition sequence for a dramatic start up. The bonnet underneath, which used to house the ammunition box, now contains the car’s battery and has the names of those involved in the project written on it.

CEO's Statement and Auction Details

Bob Laishley, CEO of Caterham, said: “When the RAF approached us about this project we jumped at the chance to be involved. Firstly, because it was an interesting build process for us as it’s the first time in our history that a Seven has been made from recycled helicopter parts.

“It was a true team effort as well, with engineers from the RAF supporting us throughout the build. But, more importantly, it’s great to know that any proceeds from the auction will go to incredibly important causes.”

Bidding for the car opens 15 August and ends 12 September through Collecting Cars.
