1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL owned new by Stirling Moss to go under the hammer

The car is part of the upcoming H&H Classics sale in Duxford on 19th June.

There is a chance to own a piece of automotive history as a 1992 Mercedez-Benz 500SL owned by Sir Stirling Moss comes up for sale this month.

The Mercedes was specially ordered to Sir Stirling’s requirements and collected by Moss himself from Bremen in Germany after its pre-delivery inspection on 24th July 1992, initially registered with a ‘7 SM’ plate the following month. Finish in Silver Metallic with Grey leather upholstery, the 500SL currently has 89,000 miles on the clock. The connection between Sir Stirling and Mercedez goes back multiple decades with the British driver famously winning the 1955 Mille Miglia in a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR.

Moss parted with the car after four years and 25,602 miles driven and it eventually found its way to the current owner in February 2006, who overhauled the cylinder heads among other bits of maintenance. It has undergone 12 main dealer and three specialist services and comes with a letter confirming Moss’ ownership along with the original owner’s wallet, handbook and service book.

James McWilliam, senior specialist, H&H Classics: “Sir Stirling Moss has often been described as the greatest Formula One driver never to have won a world championship, so we’re honoured to offer one of his personal cars.”

“As well as being a fantastic motor car in its own right, the car’s provenance is indisputable thanks to an ownership confirmation letter and a good history file which confirms careful ownership over the years. This fantastic combination means that we do expect significant interest in this wonderful piece of Sir Stirling history.”

Those interested in bidding on the car can view it in person at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, from midday on Tuesday 18th June. The sale takes place the following day.
